Runnin'
I just got back from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, where I had the honour of standing as a groomsman in my close friend, Ryan's, wedding.
Ryan had alerted me to a cool local bakery in Yarmouth where someone started selling vinyl.
Saturday morning, I made my way to the Old World Bakery, and Esther and I ate muffins and drank coffee, while I browsed through the inventory. The pricing was reasonable, as there was a $5 baseline, and a few were priced higher.
I ended up finding four $5 records I immediately wanted, which was unexpected. I made a poor assumption that, because of where I was, I was only going to find classic rock!
I was most excited to find Stan Getz/Luiz Bonfa's Jazz Samba Encore!.
I knew Jay Dee/J Dilla sampled this record for The Pharcyde's "Runnin'," so I grabbed it up right quick.
I just got back from the airport and it was the first record I put down on the platter. It wasn't until the 3rd track, on side B, "Saudade Vem Correndo" that I heard the context from which Dilla created one of my favourite hip hop songs ever. Take a listen to this beautiful song:
Now take a listen to this beautiful song:
Thank you to the Old World Bakery, and Nathan, the seller, for the great finds. If you're ever in Yarmouth - it's worth the visit.
